The grand prize recipient of the first annual N.V.M. Gonzalez award is Carmen Aquino-Sarmiento for her story "Good Intentions 101." The four runners up were ‘‘Dance’’ by Isolde Amante; ‘‘The Music of the Night’’ by Antonio Hidalgo; ‘‘The Composo of Hacienda Buyong’’ by Rosario Cruz Lucero and ‘‘Dancers’’ by Alfred Yuson. Ceremonies were held on the University of the Philippines Diliman campus on November 28, 2000, the first anniversary of N.V.M.'s death.

The N.V.M. Gonzalez award, presented annually by the University of the Philippines Creative Writing Center and N.V.M., Inc., goes to the best short story of the year, in English, published for the first time between October 8 of the previous year to September 8 of the current year. The award is open to all Filipino citizens. Only one short story per author is admissible, and stories that have already garnered awards of other prizes may still be submitted. Four copies of the short story entry (double-spaced, typrewritten or computer print-out) should be submitted to:
